Our unique social impact model of a real estate agency operates on ethical principles and ensures our clients appreciate we are different to other Agencies with our best price philosophy and very tangible differences.

 

One of our 6 differences is that we are the only agency to give 10% of our profits each year to Hands Across Canberra. Today I am celebrating 11 years in the real estate industry, so what better timing to give our first report.

 

We opened our Office on 14 January this year, and our Launch at the National Press Club was truly uplifting with all the support, plus 4 clients already secured. In the months that followed to 30th June, another 14 clients signed with us. With over $300,000 of set up costs, to be expected,  we have not made a profit. However, Hands Across Canberra will still receive $5000 to allocate towards homelessness initiatives.

 

Our first 6 months has been filled with amazing clients who have trusted in a new brand and unique model, and we are forever grateful to our first 18 sets of owners for trusting and choosing us. With 13 of our properties under offer or sold, we have an average days on market under 30 days, plus four of our 5 Auctions sold on the day of Auction. Statistically, we are punching above our weight.

 

A strategic decision in the first month of our operation to not do property management was a blessing, after hearing it would only take up about 20 hours of my week (somehow Midnight to 3am was always booked). I fervently believe splitting yourself across two facets of this industry would mean my clients and sales outcomes would suffer. I believe in using property management specialists.  We are directing all property management enquiries to go to Frances Crimmins at YWCA with their  “Rentwell” model; and to Heidi Russell and her magnificent team at Little Bird Properties.

 

We have been honoured with interviews on ABC 666 breakfast radio twice; another radio segment on the Real Estate Show on FM106.3, and received Property Of The Week and other placements in free editorial space for our clients. Our company was also profiled in HerCanberra and the Sunday Canberra Times, showing there can be a different way of operating. Allhomes also profiled our new business model with a full page spread.  Somehow Abby manages to get into the pictures, so we will have to watch that.  The support of Canberra Weekly, HerCanberra,  Allhomes and The Canberra Times for a small company deserves a huge shout-out. Thank you genuinely for your support.

 

I have continued with my appointment to the Deputy Chief Minister’s Consultative Group on Affordable Housing; and have been the only agent in the Canberra region to be continued on the Defence Housing Australia Panel of Agents across three tenders since 2009.

 

Our exclusive cinema advertising at all 8 cinemas of Palace Electric at NewActon starts later in July, so look out for us on the big screen.

 

We are yet to find another privately owned real estate agency who is giving 10% of their profits to any cause, anywhere across Australia – but will continue to do our due diligence before making the claim of Australia’s first. For the moment, we know in ACT and NSW, we are the only privately owned agency with this model.

 

…. and watch out for our agent numbers increasing. We are selective in who we choose, and you can be assured they will think and operate like we do !
